Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
John 14:1
Belief in Jesus Christ gives you the ultimate comfort. Company fires you. I trust in Jesus. Spouse wants out of the marriage. “But I know Jesus loves me. Enemies attack you. Okay, but Jesus is on my side. Death hits your family. Thankfully Jesus is with us. Doctor has bad news. Jesus will never leave me. No bad news can overwhelm or discount or destroy the fact that Jesus loves you, that God wants a relationship with you, and that He promises to be with you always. What’s the trouble if you know Jesus?
What This Teaches Us
This verse reveals the foundation of unshakable peace: belief in Jesus Christ. Jesus spoke these words to His disciples just before His crucifixion, knowing they were about to face the most troubling circumstances of their lives. He didn’t promise them that trouble wouldn’t come. He promised them that trouble wouldn’t have to control their hearts.
The ultimate comfort isn’t that bad things won’t happen—it’s that when they do happen, Jesus remains constant. Your circumstances change, but His love doesn’t. Your situation may be terrible, but His presence is certain. Your world may be falling apart, but your relationship with Him stands firm.
Notice Jesus doesn’t say “try not to be troubled” or “work really hard to not be troubled.” He says “do not let your hearts be troubled.” This is a command, which means it’s possible. How? By believing in Him just as you believe in God. Your belief in Jesus becomes the anchor that holds your heart steady when everything else is shaking.
No bad news can overwhelm or discount or destroy the fact that Jesus loves you, that God wants a relationship with you, and that He promises to be with you always. This is why knowing Jesus changes everything.
How to Apply This in Daily Life
When trouble comes—and it will—immediately turn your thoughts to Jesus. Don’t let your circumstances have the first word or the last word. Let Jesus speak truth over your situation: “I love you. I’m with you. I will never leave you.”
Practice declaring Jesus’s presence and promises over the specific troubles you’re facing. Company fires you? “I trust in Jesus.” Marriage is failing? “Jesus loves me.” Enemies attack? “Jesus is on my side.” Make it a habit to counter every piece of bad news with the unchanging truth of who Jesus is and what He’s promised.
Build your belief in Jesus before the crisis hits. The disciples had spent three years with Jesus before He spoke these words. Their belief was already established, so when trouble came, they had something solid to stand on. Don’t wait until you’re drowning to learn how to trust Him.
Ask yourself: “What’s the trouble if I know Jesus?” This question puts everything in perspective. Yes, the situation is hard. Yes, it hurts. But can it separate you from the love of Christ? Can it change God’s desire for relationship with you? Can it make Jesus break His promise to be with you always? The answer is always no.
