Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.
Zechariah 4:6
How are things going to get done in your life? By your strength? By your power? You may be able to bench-press 250 pounds, but circumstances of life are not going to happen by your own strength. No, it’s God’s spirit who makes things happen.
It’s frustrating to work and work, pushing your agenda and focusing on your dreams only to see it all collapse. You’ve given so much and sacrificed it all. Now what do you have to show for it?
What This Teaches Us
This verse reveals a life-changing truth about how God works: Here’s a new tactic. Let God do the heavy lifting. He can bench-press far more. He has more stamina. And He knows right where to move the heavy pieces without wasting a lot of time. Take a rest and let His Spirit take it from here. You’ll feel much better.
The problem isn’t that you’re not strong enough or don’t have enough power. The problem is that you’re relying on might and power in the first place. God doesn’t accomplish His purposes through human strength, strategies, or striving. He accomplishes them through His Spirit.
Think about what this means: God’s Spirit has infinite strength, unlimited stamina, and perfect wisdom about where to move things and when. You’re trying to bench-press 250 pounds; God’s Spirit can bench-press the world. You get tired; God’s Spirit never does. You waste time trying to figure out the right moves; God’s Spirit knows exactly what to do.
This isn’t about you working harder or being stronger—it’s about you stepping aside and letting God’s Spirit work. The most productive thing you can do is often to stop doing and start trusting.
How to Apply This in Daily Life
When you’re exhausted from pushing your agenda and working your dreams, stop. Recognize that you’ve been trying to accomplish things by your own might and power. Confess that this approach isn’t working and ask God’s Spirit to take over the heavy lifting.
Identify what you’ve been trying to bench-press in your own strength. Is it a career goal? A ministry vision? A relationship problem? A financial challenge? Whatever it is, acknowledge that it’s too heavy for you and hand it over to God’s Spirit who can handle far more weight than you can.
Change your tactic from striving to resting. This doesn’t mean becoming passive or lazy—it means actively trusting God’s Spirit to work instead of frantically working in your own power. Let Him do what only He can do with the stamina and wisdom you don’t have.
Pay attention to how much better you feel when you let God’s Spirit take over. The burden lifts. The pressure releases. The exhaustion fades. This is the sign that you’re operating in God’s way instead of your own. When you’re worn out and frustrated, you’re probably doing it by might and power. When you’re at rest even in the midst of challenges, you’re probably doing it by His Spirit.

Prayer For Guidance and Strength
Lord Almighty, thank You for this word that changes everything. Not by might nor by power, but by Your Spirit. I confess that I’ve been trying to get things done in my life by my own strength and my own power. I’ve been pushing my agenda and focusing on my dreams, working and working until I’m exhausted. And what do I have to show for it? [Name what has collapsed or not worked.]
I’m ready to try a new tactic. I’m ready to let You do the heavy lifting. You can bench-press far more than I can. You have stamina that never runs out. You know exactly where to move the heavy pieces without wasting time. I don’t have any of that. I’m worn out and frustrated.
So I’m taking a rest. I’m letting Your Spirit take it from here. I hand over [name specific situations] to Your Spirit. I stop striving in my own might and power. I trust that Your Spirit will accomplish what I could never accomplish on my own.
Help me to feel much better as I release these burdens to You. Teach me to operate by Your Spirit in everything I do, not by my limited strength and power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
