Unstoppable Through Him-Fortified by Faith 1

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." (NKJV)

Romans 8:28

God Works All Things for Good

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (NKJV)

Not some things. All things.

Not just the good things, not just the things that make sense, not just the things you would have chosen. All things—including the hard things, the painful things, the things you wish had never happened.

God is working all of it together for your good.

This doesn’t mean everything that happens is good. Some things are terrible. Some things are evil. Some things break your heart and shouldn’t have happened.

But God has the power to take even the worst things and work them together with everything else in your life to produce something good. He’s weaving all the threads—the bright ones and the dark ones—into something beautiful that you can’t see yet.

You don’t have to understand how He’s doing it. You just need to trust that He is.

What This Teaches Us

This is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. Let’s be clear about what it does and doesn’t say.

It doesn’t say that everything that happens is good. Some things that happen are evil. Sin is real. Suffering is real. Loss is real. We live in a broken world where bad things happen.

It doesn’t say that God causes all things. God doesn’t cause evil. He doesn’t orchestrate suffering. But He does sovereignly work within the reality of a fallen world to bring about good.

What it does say is that God works all things together for good. The Greek word for “work together” means to cooperate, to work in combination. God takes all the different elements of your life—good and bad, chosen and unchosen, pleasant and painful—and works them together to produce good.

Think of it like a recipe. Flour by itself isn’t a cake. Eggs by themselves aren’t a cake. Baking soda by itself definitely isn’t a cake—it’s bitter. But when you combine all the ingredients together and apply heat, you get something good. God is the master chef who knows how to combine all the ingredients of your life—even the bitter ones—to produce something good.

Notice the conditions: “to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” This promise is specifically for God’s children. It’s not a universal principle that everything always works out for everyone. It’s a specific promise that for those who belong to God, He will work everything together for their ultimate good.

And what is that “good”? The verses that follow make it clear: God is working to conform you to the image of His Son. The good He’s working toward isn’t necessarily your comfort or your ease or your circumstances turning out the way you wanted. It’s your transformation into Christlikeness.

That’s the good that’s worth more than anything else.

How to Apply This in Daily Life

Trust God with the things that don’t make sense. You don’t have to understand how God is going to work something for good in order to trust that He will. The promise isn’t “we understand how all things work together for good”—it’s “we know that all things work together for good.” You can know it’s true even when you can’t see how it’s possible.

Stop trying to separate your life into “good” experiences and “bad” experiences. God isn’t working only with the good parts. He’s working with all of it. The painful season you’re in right now? God is working that together with everything else for your good. The mistake you made last year? God is working that together with everything else. Nothing is wasted in God’s hands.

Remember that “good” means conforming to Christ’s image, not just comfortable circumstances. God’s definition of good might be different from yours. You might want a good job, a good relationship, good health. God wants something better: He wants you to become more like Jesus. Sometimes the hard things do more to accomplish that than the easy things.

Let this truth give you hope in the midst of suffering. When you’re in pain and can’t see any way forward, remember: God is working. You can’t see it yet. You might not see it for years. But He’s weaving all the threads together, and one day you’ll look back and see the good He was working toward all along.

Don’t minimize the pain by rushing to “the good.” This verse isn’t meant to dismiss your suffering or tell you to just get over it. God doesn’t tell you to pretend something isn’t painful. He tells you that He’s working even in the painful things. You can grieve and trust at the same time. You can hurt and hope at the same time.

Keep loving God even when you can’t see what He’s doing. The promise is “to those who love God.” Love is a choice, not a feeling. You can choose to love God—to trust Him, to stay connected to Him, to keep following Him—even when your circumstances are hard and you can’t see how anything good could possibly come from what you’re going through.

Reflection Questions

  • What situation in your life right now feels like it could never possibly work together for good? Can you trust God with it anyway?
  • How do you tend to define “good”—as comfortable circumstances, or as becoming more like Christ? How might God’s definition of good be different from yours?
  • Looking back, can you identify times when God worked something painful in your past together with other things to produce something good you couldn’t have seen at the time?
  • What would it look like to trust that God is working right now in the situation you’re facing, even though you can’t see or understand what He’s doing?

Prayer For Guidance and Strength

Heavenly Father, thank You for this promise that You work all things together for good for those who love You.

I confess that I don’t always believe it. There are things in my life right now that feel like they could never possibly work together for good. [Name the specific situations that feel hopeless or painful.] I can’t see how anything good could come from this.

But You tell me I don’t have to understand how—I just need to trust that You are working. You’re the master who knows how to take all the ingredients of my life, even the bitter ones, and work them together to produce something good.

Help me trust You with the things that don’t make sense. Help me believe that You’re working even when I can’t see it. Remind me that nothing is wasted in Your hands—not the painful things, not the mistakes, not the suffering, not the losses. You’re working with all of it.

Forgive me for defining “good” as comfortable circumstances when You define it as conforming me to Christ’s image. I want the easy path, but You want something better for me—You want me to become more like Jesus. Help me trust that Your definition of good is better than mine, even when it’s harder.

Thank You that You’re working right now in the situation I’m facing. I can’t see it. I might not see it for years. But one day I’ll look back and see the good You were working toward all along. Until then, help me keep loving You, keep trusting You, keep following You, even when I can’t see what You’re doing.

I choose to believe that You are working all things—not some things, all things—together for my good. Not because my circumstances feel good, but because You promised it and You keep Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
