Put God First and He’ll Take Care of the Rest

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Matthew 6:33

You’re worried about a lot of things. Your needs. Your future. Your security. You’re spending your energy chasing after what you think will make you safe and satisfied.

But Jesus gives you a different priority: Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.

Not seek second. Not seek eventually. Seek first. Make God and His ways your top priority. Put His kingdom above your kingdom. Put His will above your wants.

And when you do, Jesus promises: all these things shall be added to you. The things you’re worried about—the things you need—God will take care of them.

You don’t have to choose between seeking God and having your needs met. When you put God first, He makes sure you get what you need.

What This Teaches Us

This verse comes at the end of Jesus’ teaching about worry and anxiety. He’s been explaining why His followers shouldn’t be anxious about food, drink, or clothing—about basic needs. And He gives them this solution: change your priority from seeking things to seeking God.

“Seek first the kingdom of God” means make God’s kingdom your number one pursuit. The kingdom of God is wherever God rules, wherever His will is done. Seeking the kingdom means pursuing God’s purposes, living under His lordship, aligning yourself with His plans rather than your own.

“And His righteousness” means pursuing right living according to God’s standards. It’s not just about external religious activity—it’s about becoming the kind of person God wants you to be, living in the right relationship with God and others.

The word “first” is critical. Jesus isn’t saying seek the kingdom in addition to everything else. He’s saying seek the kingdom before everything else. Make it your primary pursuit. Your top priority. Your first concern.

Then comes the promise: “and all these things shall be added to you.” What things? The things Jesus has been talking about—food, drink, clothing, the basic necessities of life. The things people worry about and pursue anxiously.

Jesus is saying: when you prioritize My kingdom, I’ll take care of your needs. You don’t have to worry about them. You don’t have to anxiously chase after them. You don’t have to make them your focus. Focus on Me and My kingdom, and I’ll make sure you get what you need.

This doesn’t mean God gives you everything you want. It means He provides what you need. And it doesn’t mean you don’t work or plan—it means you don’t worry. You work and plan with trust that God is your provider, not with anxiety that everything depends on you.

The order matters. God doesn’t say get all your needs met first, then seek My kingdom. He says seek My kingdom first, and I’ll handle your needs. Trust precedes provision.

How to Apply This in Daily Life

Evaluate your current priorities. What are you actually seeking first? What gets your best time, your best energy, your primary focus? If you’re honest, is it God’s kingdom or something else—financial security, career success, relationships, comfort? Your calendar and your bank account reveal your real priorities.

Make daily decisions that put God’s kingdom first. This isn’t just a one-time commitment—it’s a daily practice. When you wake up, seek God before checking your phone. When you make decisions, ask “What does God want?” before asking “What do I want?” When you use your resources, prioritize kingdom purposes before personal desires.

Pursue righteousness, not just religious activity. Seeking God’s righteousness means actually becoming more like Jesus—more patient, more loving, more honest, more generous. It’s not just about going to church or reading your Bible (though those matter). It’s about letting God transform who you are.

Trust God with your needs instead of worrying about them. When you’re tempted to be anxious about money, security, or provision, remind yourself: God promised to add these things if I seek His kingdom first. Am I seeking His kingdom first? Then I can trust Him to handle my needs.

Stop making decisions out of fear of not having enough. When fear drives your decisions—fear of not having enough money, enough security, enough success—you’re not seeking God’s kingdom first. Make decisions based on “What does God want me to do?” not “What will keep me safe?”

Look for evidence of God adding things to you. Pay attention to how God provides when you prioritize His kingdom. Notice the ways He takes care of your needs when you’re focused on His purposes. Let those experiences build your trust and encourage you to keep seeking Him first.

Reflection Questions

  • If someone looked at your calendar, your bank account, and your daily priorities, what would they say you’re seeking first? Is it God’s kingdom or something else?
  • What needs or concerns are you anxiously pursuing right now that you need to release to God’s care? What would it look like to trust Him with those while you focus on His kingdom?
  • Where is God calling you to make a decision that puts His kingdom first, even though it might not make sense from a worldly perspective?
  • How have you seen God provide for you in the past when you’ve prioritized His purposes? How can those memories build your trust now?

Prayer For Guidance and Strength

Heavenly Father, thank You for this clear instruction from Jesus. Thank You that You show me what my priority should be and promise to take care of what I need.

I confess that I don’t always seek Your kingdom first. Too often I seek security first. Or success first. Or comfort first. Or what makes me feel safe first. I spend my energy chasing after things, worrying about my needs, anxiously trying to make sure I have enough.

But Jesus tells me: Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Help me make Your kingdom my top priority. Help me pursue Your purposes before my own plans. Help me align myself with Your will instead of just seeking what I want. Let Your kingdom be what I think about first, what I plan around first, what I invest in first.

Help me pursue Your righteousness—not just religious activity, but actually becoming more like Jesus. Make me more patient, more loving, more honest, more generous. Transform who I am from the inside out.

I release my anxious pursuit of needs to You. I’m worried about [name specific concerns about provision, security, needs]. But if I’m seeking Your kingdom first, You promise to add these things to me. I choose to trust that promise. Help me stop making these needs my primary focus and instead focus on You.

When I’m tempted to make decisions out of fear—fear of not having enough money, enough security, enough success—remind me that I’m not seeking Your kingdom first. Help me make decisions based on “What do You want me to do?” not “What will keep me safe?”

Thank You for the times You’ve already provided when I’ve prioritized Your kingdom. [Name specific examples of God’s provision in the past.] Those experiences build my trust. Help me remember them when I’m tempted to worry.

I choose to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness. I trust that as I do, You will add to me what I need. You’re my provider. You know what I need. You’ll take care of me. Help me live like I believe that. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
