Overflow with Hope

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13

We run our lives on empty just like we drive around in our cars. We flirt with disaster wondering how much we can squeeze out of that fuel indicator light. Is it twenty miles? Maybe thirty. Let’s see if we can get to the next exit… forty miles down the road.

Later, as we sit on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck, we wonder why we didn’t fill up. What made us push to empty? Usually it’s pride. We thought we could do it ourselves.

Living close to empty only causes us worry as we stare at the fuel indicator. We forget to look at the speedometer or even out the window. If we fill up, it’s one less thing to worry about.

God wants to fill our tanks, not with distractions and sermons, but with joy, peace, and hope. Where do we get that kind of fuel? At a gas station named Trust. As you pull up into that station, you tell the attendant to “fill ‘er up.” The fuel flows freely, pouring over and spilling on the ground. “So much joy, peace, and hope,” you say. “We have plenty where that came from,” the attendant says with a smile.

Trust God and let your tank overflow.

What This Teaches Us

This verse is Paul’s prayer for the Roman believers, and it reveals how God wants to fill our lives. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

We run our lives on empty just like we drive around in our cars. We flirt with disaster wondering how much we can squeeze out of that fuel indicator light. We push ourselves to the limit, running on fumes, trying to see how far we can go before we completely run out.

Later, as we sit on the side of the road waiting for help, we wonder why we didn’t fill up. What made us push to empty? Usually it’s pride. We thought we could do it ourselves. We didn’t want to stop. We didn’t want to admit we needed to refuel.

Living close to empty only causes us worry. We stare at the fuel indicator, anxious about whether we’ll make it. We forget to look at the speedometer or even out the window. We’re so consumed with monitoring our dwindling resources that we miss everything else. If we fill up, it’s one less thing to worry about.

God wants to fill our tanks, not with distractions and sermons, but with joy, peace, and hope. Where do we get that kind of fuel? At a gas station named Trust. As you trust in Him, God fills you. The verse says “as you trust in him” God fills you with joy and peace, so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The imagery is abundant—not just filled, but overflowing. The fuel flows freely, pouring over and spilling on the ground. “So much joy, peace, and hope,” you say. “We have plenty where that came from,” the attendant says with a smile.

Trust God and let your tank overflow.

How to Apply This in Daily Life

Stop running your life on empty. If you’re constantly anxious, worried, joyless, and hopeless, you’re running on fumes. You’re flirting with disaster, trying to see how much you can squeeze out before you completely break down. Pull over and refuel.

Recognize what’s making you push to empty. Usually it’s pride. You think you can do it yourself. You don’t want to stop and admit you need help. You don’t want to take time to trust God and let Him fill you. But pushing to empty only leads to sitting on the side of the road waiting for rescue.

Let God fill your tank with what really matters. Not distractions. Not busyness. Not even religious activities. God wants to fill you with joy, peace, and hope. These are the fuel that will actually power your life.

Pull up to the gas station named Trust. The key to being filled is trusting God. “As you trust in him” God fills you with joy and peace. You can’t manufacture these things yourself. You can’t earn them. You receive them as you trust.

Expect to overflow. God doesn’t just want to get you to “adequate” or “manageable.” He wants you to overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Abundant supply. More than enough. Pouring over and spilling out. That’s God’s plan for you.

Stop worrying about the fuel indicator. When you’re running on empty, you spend all your time staring at the gauge, anxious about whether you’ll make it. When you’re filled and overflowing, you’re free to enjoy the journey. You can look at the speedometer. You can look out the window. You can focus on where you’re going instead of obsessing over your dwindling resources.
