For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
Hebrews 4:15
High priests can seem distant and unapproachable, separated by their position and authority. You might need three secretaries and a six-month wait just to get a meeting with an important religious leader. But Jesus is completely different. He didn’t stay in heaven’s throne room, removed from human struggle. Instead, He left His busy schedule in heaven and came to earth to experience our lives firsthand. He knows hunger, exhaustion, rejection, betrayal, and pain. He faced the same temptations we face. He understands what it’s like to be human because He lived it. And because He never sinned, He can help us overcome our struggles without condemning us.
What This Teaches Us
This verse reveals something remarkable about Jesus: He is both fully God and fully human, which makes Him the perfect mediator between us and God. Unlike earthly priests who might judge or misunderstand us, Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses because He’s experienced them Himself.
Some people think God is too distant or too busy to care about their daily struggles. Others feel too ashamed to approach Him with their failures and temptations. But Hebrews 4:15 destroys both of these lies. Jesus made time to become human and face our temptations. He’s not shocked by your struggles—He’s been there.
Jesus is intimately aware of your situation. He knows the temptations you’re facing because He faced those same temptations. He understands your weaknesses because He saw them firsthand during His time on earth. When you feel like you’ve mangled your life, Jesus wants you to come to Him. He made time for you then, and He continues to make time for you now. He’s been there. He knows how it feels.
How to Apply This in Daily Life
When you’re facing temptation, remember that Jesus understands exactly what you’re going through. Bring your struggles to Him in prayer instead of hiding them in shame. When you fail, approach His throne of grace with confidence, knowing He sympathizes with your weakness and offers mercy, not condemnation.
Share your burdens with Him as you would with someone who truly understands your situation—because He does. Stop thinking you need to clean yourself up before coming to Jesus. He’s already seen it all and experienced it all. Let His empathy give you courage to be honest about your struggles and seek His help immediately, not eventually.
Don’t wait until next week or until you’ve gotten your act together. Jesus mastered our lives and wants us to come to Him when we feel we’ve mangled them. He has plenty of time for you right now.

Prayer For Guidance and Strength
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to be our High Priest who truly understands us. Thank You that He didn’t remain distant but came down to experience our humanity, our temptations, and our weaknesses. Lord, I confess that I often try to hide my struggles from You out of shame or fear of judgment. I sometimes think You’re too busy or too holy to deal with my messy life.
Help me to remember that Jesus sympathizes with my weaknesses and offers grace instead of condemnation. Give me the courage to approach Your throne of grace confidently right now, bringing my temptations, failures, and burdens to You without delay. When I feel alone in my struggles, remind me that Jesus has walked this path before me and He walks with me now.
Thank You that You made time for me by coming to earth, and thank You that You continue to make time for me today. Thank You for Your empathy, Your mercy, and Your constant availability. Help me to live today in the freedom of knowing I have a Savior who understands completely and is never too busy for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
