The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.
Ephesians 1:18
You can have something and not realize what you have. You can possess treasure and think you’re poor. You can have access to incredible resources and never tap into them.
That’s why Paul prays for the Ephesians: that the eyes of their hearts would be enlightened. Not that they would get something new, but that they would see what they already have.
You have a calling. You have an inheritance. You have riches in Christ. But you might not know it yet. You might not see it. Your spiritual eyes might need opening.
Paul’s prayer is for you to see—to really understand—the incredible hope and riches that belong to you as God’s child.
What This Teaches Us
This verse comes from Paul’s prayer for the Ephesian church. He’s not praying for their circumstances to change or their problems to be solved. He’s praying for something deeper: that they would see and understand what they already have in Christ.
“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened” speaks to spiritual sight. The Greek literally refers to “the eyes of your heart.” This isn’t about physical vision or intellectual comprehension. It’s about the heart seeing and grasping spiritual realities that the natural mind can’t perceive on its own.
You need enlightenment—divine illumination—to see these things. You can read about them, hear about them, even memorize them, but until the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of your heart, you won’t truly grasp what you have.
Paul prays for them to know three things specifically:
First, “the hope of His calling.” God has called you. That’s not just an invitation—it’s a divine summons with purpose and destiny attached. The “hope” of that calling is the confident expectation of where God is taking you, what He’s making you into, the future He has planned. It’s hope worth knowing about.
Second, “the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints.” This is fascinating—it’s not just about our inheritance in God, but God’s inheritance in us. We’re His treasured possession. The phrase “riches of the glory” emphasizes how valuable believers are to God. You’re not just tolerated or accepted—you’re God’s prized inheritance.
The problem isn’t that you don’t have these things. The problem is you don’t know you have them. You haven’t seen them. You’re living below your spiritual privilege because your heart’s eyes haven’t been opened to the reality of what belongs to you in Christ.
This is why Paul prays. Only God can open your spiritual eyes. Only the Holy Spirit can illuminate truth so your heart grasps it, not just your head.
How to Apply This in Daily Life
Pray for spiritual sight, not just solutions. When you pray, don’t only ask God to change your circumstances. Ask Him to open the eyes of your heart—to help you see what you already have in Him. Sometimes you don’t need a new situation; you need new sight into your current situation.
Recognize that you might be living below your spiritual privilege. You have access to incredible resources in Christ—hope, inheritance, riches—but you might not be living like you have them. Not because they’re not available, but because you haven’t seen them yet. Ask God to show you what you’re missing.
Spend time meditating on who you are in Christ. Don’t just read Scripture—ask the Holy Spirit to enlighten the eyes of your heart as you read. Pray over verses about your identity, your calling, your inheritance. Ask God to move truth from your head to your heart so you really see and believe it.
Stop defining yourself by your circumstances. When you feel poor, remember you have riches in Christ. When you feel hopeless, remember you have the hope of His calling. When you feel worthless, remember you’re God’s treasured inheritance. Your circumstances don’t define what you have—Christ does.
Remember that knowledge isn’t enough—you need revelation. You can know facts about God without truly seeing God. You can know truths about your identity without truly grasping who you are. The difference is whether the eyes of your heart are enlightened. Keep asking God for revelation, not just information.
Let this change how you approach challenges. When you face difficulties, remember: you have hope because of God’s calling, you have value because you’re God’s inheritance, you have resources because of the riches in Christ. Those realities don’t change based on your circumstances. Let them anchor you when life is hard.
Reflection Questions
- If the eyes of your heart were truly enlightened, what would you see about your life, your calling, and your identity that you’re currently missing?
- Are you living below your spiritual privilege—possessing things in Christ that you’re not accessing because you don’t really see them yet?
- What specific truths about who you are in Christ do you need God to move from your head to your heart? What do you know intellectually but haven’t grasped emotionally or spiritually?
- How would your life change if you truly saw and believed the hope of God’s calling on your life and the fact that you’re His treasured inheritance?
Prayer For Guidance and Strength
Heavenly Father, I pray Paul’s prayer for myself: open the eyes of my heart. Enlighten my understanding. Help me see what I already have in You.
I confess that I often live below my spiritual privilege. I have access to incredible things in Christ—hope, inheritance, riches—but I’m not living like I have them. Not because they’re not available, but because I haven’t truly seen them yet. I know facts in my head, but my heart hasn’t grasped the reality.
Open the eyes of my heart. Help me see the hope of Your calling. You’ve called me—not just invited me, but summoned me with purpose and destiny. Help me understand where You’re taking me, what You’re making me into, the future You have planned. Give me confident expectation based on Your promises.
Help me see the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in me. Thank You that I’m not just tolerated or accepted—I’m Your treasured possession. I’m valuable to You. I’m Your prized inheritance. Help me grasp how You see me, not just how I see myself.
I recognize that I can read about these things, hear about them, even memorize them, but unless You open the eyes of my heart, I won’t truly grasp them. I need Your Holy Spirit to illuminate truth so my heart sees it, not just my head.
Forgive me for defining myself by my circumstances instead of by who I am in Christ. When I feel poor, remind me I have riches in You. When I feel hopeless, remind me I have the hope of Your calling. When I feel worthless, remind me I’m Your treasured inheritance. My circumstances don’t define what I have—You do.
Move truth from my head to my heart. I don’t just want information—I want revelation. I don’t just want to know facts about You—I want to truly see You. I don’t just want to know truths about my identity—I want to grasp who I really am.
Let this change how I approach challenges. When I face difficulties, help me remember: I have hope because of Your calling, I have value because I’m Your inheritance, I have resources because of the riches in Christ. Those realities don’t change based on my circumstances. Let them anchor me when life is hard.
Open the eyes of my heart, Lord. Help me see what I have in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
