My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as one pleads for a friend.
Job 16:20-21
Job cried out with the understanding that he was not alone in his situation.
He knew that God interceded for him, like a friend. While we are trained to see God as King, Creator, and Conqueror, we can also see Him as a friendly ally. Yes, He’s all of those other things—the titles still apply—but that doesn’t mean He can’t have all the qualities that we look for in a friend: someone who relates to us, who understands us, who laughs at our jokes, who hangs out with us, who we turn to in hard times.
It should be encouraging to know that God is your all-knowing, ever-present friend, who is always available to listen and ready to help.
What This Teaches Us
This verse reveals a crucial truth about God’s character: He is not just sovereign—He is also personal. Job was in the middle of devastating loss, overwhelming grief, and profound confusion. His friends had failed him. His circumstances had crushed him. But in the midst of all that pain, Job discovered something powerful: God was interceding for him like a friend.
We often reduce God to His transcendent qualities. He’s the Almighty, the King of Kings, the Creator of the universe, the Judge of all. These are all true and important. But if that’s all we see, we miss something vital about who God is. He’s also the friend who sits with you in your pain, who pleads your case, who understands what you’re going through.
Think about what makes a good friend. A friend relates to you—they get where you’re coming from. A friend understands you—they know your heart even when your words fail. A friend laughs at your jokes—they enjoy your company. A friend hangs out with you—they want to be present in your life. A friend is there in hard times—they don’t disappear when things get difficult.
God is all of that. He’s the friend who never leaves, never misunderstands, never gets tired of you, never stops interceding on your behalf. The same God who holds galaxies in place also holds your tears in a bottle. The same God who commands armies also calls you friend.
This is the God Job discovered in his suffering—not a distant deity observing from afar, but an intercessor who pleads on his behalf, a friend who stays close even when everything else falls apart.
How to Apply This in Daily Life
When you feel alone in your situation, remember Job’s revelation. You’re not alone. God is interceding for you like a friend. He’s pleading your case before the throne of heaven. He’s advocating for you with all the passion and loyalty of the best friend you’ve ever had.
Stop treating God only as a distant authority figure you approach with fear and formality. Yes, approach Him with reverence—He is still King. But also approach Him as a friend. Talk to Him like you’d talk to someone who truly understands you. Share your heart, your frustrations, your confusion, your pain. He’s not just willing to listen—He wants to listen.
Let God be both your King and your friend. Don’t choose one or the other. He’s powerful enough to rule the universe and personal enough to care about your daily struggles. He’s majestic enough to deserve worship and intimate enough to desire relationship. He’s sovereign enough to control all things and loving enough to intercede for you like a friend.
When your eyes pour out tears, know that God sees every one. When you’re crying out in pain, know that He’s not just hearing you from a distance—He’s pleading on your behalf, fighting for you, interceding for you as one friend would for another.
It should be encouraging to know that God is your all-knowing, ever-present friend, who is always available to listen and ready to help. He knows everything about you and still chooses friendship. He’s present in every moment and never walks away. He’s always available—you’ll never get His voicemail. He’s ready to help—you’re never bothering Him.
