Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
Romans 8:34
Someone is praying for you right now. Not just anyone—Jesus Christ Himself.
At the right hand of God, in the place of ultimate authority and power, Jesus is interceding for you. He’s advocating for you. He’s speaking on your behalf.
When accusations come—from the enemy, from others, from your own conscience—Jesus stands as your defender. He’s the one who died for you. He’s the one who rose again. And He’s the one who now intercedes for you.
No condemnation can stick when Jesus is your advocate. No accusation can stand when He’s pleading your case.
You have a defender in heaven who never stops interceding for you.
What This Teaches Us
Paul is building a powerful argument about the security of believers in Christ. He’s asked a series of rhetorical questions: Who can bring charges against God’s elect? Who can condemn?
And his answer centers on Christ: It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
Notice the progression of what Christ has done and is doing:
He died. Jesus paid the price for your sin. He took the condemnation you deserved. The penalty has been paid in full. When anyone tries to condemn you, Jesus points to the cross and says “It’s finished. I died for that.”
He is risen. Death couldn’t hold Him. He conquered sin, death, and the grave. His resurrection proves His sacrifice was accepted by the Father. It demonstrates His power and authority. A dead Savior couldn’t help you, but a risen Savior has conquered everything that threatens you.
He is at the right hand of God. This is the place of honor, authority, and power. Jesus isn’t somewhere distant or uninvolved—He’s in the position of ultimate authority in the universe. He has the Father’s ear. He has all power and authority. And He uses that position for you.
He makes intercession for us. Present tense, ongoing action. Jesus is constantly, continually interceding for you. He’s advocating for you. He’s praying for you. He’s representing you before the Father. This isn’t something He did once—it’s what He’s doing right now and will continue doing.
The Greek word for “intercession” means to plead on behalf of someone, to advocate, to intervene for their benefit. Jesus stands before the Father as your representative, your advocate, your defender.
When Satan accuses you (and he does—Revelation 12:10 calls him “the accuser of the brethren”), Jesus intercedes. When your conscience condemns you, Jesus intercedes. When circumstances make you feel unworthy, Jesus intercedes. He never stops advocating for you.
How to Apply This in Daily Life
Stop listening to condemnation. When you hear voices of accusation—whether from the enemy, from others, or from your own mind—remember: Christ has died, risen, and is interceding for you. No condemnation can stand against that. You might feel condemned, but Christ’s advocacy overrules every accusation.
Remember that Jesus is actively working on your behalf right now. He’s not just resting in heaven. He’s interceding for you. He’s praying for you. He’s advocating for you before the Father. You’re on His mind. Your struggles, your needs, your weaknesses—He’s bringing them all before the Father on your behalf.
Let Jesus’ intercession give you confidence in prayer. When you pray, you’re not alone. Jesus is interceding for you at the same time. He’s adding His perfect prayers to your imperfect ones. He’s translating your groanings into perfect petitions. You can approach God boldly because you have an advocate.
Trust that Jesus’ position gives weight to His intercession. He’s at the right hand of God—the place of ultimate authority. When He intercedes for you, the Father listens. His advocacy carries infinite weight. You have the best possible representative in the highest possible position.
Stop trying to defend yourself. When accusations come, your instinct might be to justify yourself, to explain, to make excuses. But you don’t have to. Jesus is your defender. Let Him do the advocating. Rest in His intercession instead of scrambling for your own defense.
Thank Jesus regularly for His ongoing intercession. Don’t take this for granted. The Son of God—who died and rose for you—is spending eternity interceding for you. That’s remarkable. Thank Him for His constant advocacy on your behalf.
