Don’t be afraid. You’re family. What makes you “family”? In our world, blood. Heritages share common DNA and genetic traits passed on from generation to generation. Marriage unites families, brought together by commitment. Paul said in Romans that we have the Holy Spirit inside us, and that Holy Spirit makes us a part of a family. It’s not based on blood, but it is based on commitment—commitment to Jesus Christ.

This verse reveals the radical difference between being God’s slave and being God’s child. We share one common Father, too. You’re not the great-great-great-great-grandchild of God. You are His child, first generation, adopted into His family. You can call Him Dad.
Your family may disappoint you on earth. But your heavenly Daddy won’t. You’re not His slave or His hired worker—you are His child. This changes everything about how you relate to God. Slaves serve out of fear and obligation. Hired workers perform for payment. But children belong to the family and call the Father “Dad.”
The spirit of adoption means you have full family privileges. You’re not on probation, not a second-class citizen in God’s kingdom, not waiting to be fully accepted. You’re already in. The Holy Spirit inside you confirms this reality, enabling you to cry out “Abba! Father!”—the intimate term a child uses for their daddy.
This adoption is based on commitment to Jesus Christ, not on your bloodline or your performance. God chose you, brought you into His family, and gave you His Spirit as the guarantee that you belong to Him forever.
Stop relating to God like a slave who fears punishment or a hired worker who must earn approval. You’re His child. Talk to Him like a child talks to a loving father—with honesty, trust, and intimacy. Call Him “Dad” in your prayers if that helps you remember your true relationship with Him.
When fear creeps in, remember that you haven’t received a spirit of slavery leading to fear. The Holy Spirit inside you is the spirit of adoption. Fear is the old way of relating to God; family intimacy is the new way. When you’re afraid of God’s anger or rejection, you’re forgetting who you are—His adopted child.
Recognize that your heavenly Father won’t disappoint you like earthly family might. People will let you down, but God won’t. He’s committed to you as His child, and that commitment is unbreakable. You don’t have to perform or earn His love—you already have it by adoption.
Live in the freedom of being God’s child. You’re first generation, directly adopted into His family. You have immediate access to the Father. You share His name. You’re His heir. Let this truth transform how you pray, how you worship, and how you face each day.
Heavenly Father—Abba, Dad—thank You for adopting me into Your family. Thank You that I haven’t received a spirit of slavery leading to fear, but a spirit of adoption as Your son/daughter. Lord, I confess that I sometimes relate to You like a fearful slave or a performing worker instead of as Your child.
Help me to remember who I am. I’m not the great-great-great-great-grandchild of God. I’m Your child, first generation, adopted directly into Your family through Jesus Christ. I belong to You. I can call You Dad. The Holy Spirit inside me confirms this reality.
Forgive me for letting earthly family disappointments make me doubt Your commitment to me. You’re not like earthly parents or family members who let me down. You’re my heavenly Daddy who will never disappoint me, never reject me, never abandon me. I’m not Your slave or Your hired worker—I’m Your child.
Help me to live in the freedom of this adoption. Give me the confidence to approach You with intimacy and honesty. Let me cry out “Abba! Father!” with genuine trust and love. Transform how I pray, how I worship, and how I face each day, knowing I’m Your beloved child with full family privileges. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
