"The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did."

Genesis 39:23

God Is With You

“The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.” (Genesis 39:23)

Joseph, son of Jacob, was framed and sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. End of his story? End of his life? No longer able to be used by God?

No way. God was just getting started with Joseph. Trapped in a place with no freedom, Joseph impressed the warden and interpreted dreams, catching the attention of Pharaoh. With four walls around him, Joseph could do things that changed the entire country and the course of history. In the worst of places, the best of things happened to him.

Success cannot be confined by circumstances. It is unleashed by those willing to be used by God wherever they are.

God is with those who are trapped. You may be in the worst of places, but God is still working. In a place of no freedom, you are free to work for God.

Don’t let the walls define you or constrain you. Define your situation by what God can do

What This Teaches Us

This verse reveals a crucial truth about God’s presence: your circumstances don’t determine God’s ability to use you. Joseph’s story is proof that being in the worst possible situation doesn’t disqualify you from doing significant things for God. In fact, sometimes God does His greatest work through people in impossible places.

Think about Joseph’s journey. Sold into slavery by his brothers. Falsely accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Thrown into prison with no trial, no justice, no hope of release. By any measure, his life was over. His dreams were dead. His potential was wasted behind prison walls.

But God was just getting started. Trapped in a place with no freedom, Joseph impressed the warden. He interpreted dreams. He caught the attention of Pharaoh. With four walls around him, he could do things that changed the entire country and the course of history. In the worst of places, the best of things happened to him.

Notice what made the difference: “The Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.” Joseph’s success wasn’t dependent on his circumstances being favorable. It was dependent on God’s presence. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care because it was clear that God was working through him.

Success cannot be confined by circumstances. It is unleashed by those willing to be used by God wherever they are. Your prison doesn’t limit God’s power. Your constraints don’t constrain His ability to work through you.

How to Apply This in Daily Life

God is with those who are trapped. Maybe you’re in a job you hate, a relationship that’s broken, a financial situation that feels hopeless, a health crisis that’s limiting your life. You may be in the worst of places, but God is still working.

Stop defining your situation by the walls around you. Stop letting your circumstances convince you that God can’t use you. Joseph was literally in prison—literal walls, literal chains, literal confinement—and God still used him to save nations.

In a place of no freedom, you are free to work for God. You may not be able to control your circumstances, but you can control your faithfulness. You may not be able to change your situation, but you can be excellent where you are. You may not be able to escape your prison, but you can let God work through you right there.

Don’t let the walls define you or constrain you. Define your situation by what God can do where you are. Joseph didn’t look at prison and think, “My life is over.” He looked at prison and thought, “God is still with me, so I’m going to be faithful right here.”

The result? The warden trusted him with everything. Pharaoh eventually noticed him. God positioned him to save an entire nation from famine. All because Joseph refused to let prison walls determine what God could do through him.

Your worst place might become the launching pad for God’s greatest work in your life. But only if you’re willing to be used by God wherever you are.

Reflection Questions

  • What “prison” are you in right now—what circumstances feel like walls confining you and limiting what you can do?
  • Have you decided that your current situation disqualifies you from being used by God? Why?
  • Can you see evidence that God is still with you even in your worst place? What would it look like to be faithful where you are instead of waiting for circumstances to change?
  • Are you defining your situation by the walls around you, or by what God can do where you are?

Prayer For Guidance and Strength

Lord, I feel like Joseph—trapped in circumstances I didn’t choose, suffering consequences I don’t deserve, stuck in a place with no apparent way out. [Name your specific circumstances.] End of my story? End of my usefulness to You?

Thank You for reminding me that You were just getting started with Joseph when he went to prison. Thank You that being trapped doesn’t mean being abandoned by You. You were with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did, even in prison.

Help me to believe that success cannot be confined by circumstances. It is unleashed by those willing to be used by You wherever they are. You are with those who are trapped. I may be in the worst of places, but You are still working.

In this place of no freedom, I am free to work for You. I can’t control my circumstances, but I can control my faithfulness. Help me to be excellent right where I am, to impress those around me with Your presence in my life, to do whatever You call me to do even within these walls.

Don’t let me define myself by these walls or let them constrain what You can do through me. Help me to define my situation by what You can do where I am. You used Joseph to change the course of history from a prison cell. Use me right here, right now, in the middle of this impossible situation.

Thank You that my worst place might become the launching pad for Your greatest work in my life. I’m willing to be used by You wherever I am. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
