“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
If you believe in Jesus Christ, you have the Holy Spirit in you. If you have the Holy Spirit in you, there’s no reason to whine, complain, or wonder, How am I ever going to get through this?
When Popeye needed strength, he popped open a can of spinach. Miraculously, his muscles expanded and his courage exploded. Popeye was then able to physically conquer anything in his way. The same is true spiritually for those with the Spirit of God. Confronting a fierce enemy, believers have an inner power. Battling hate, believers have a supernatural love. Facing temptation, believers have spiritual self-discipline.
This verse reveals what’s already inside you if you’re a believer: with the Holy Spirit inside you, you are strong, filled with love, and able to live a disciplined life. Don’t forget what’s inside you. Pop open a can of Holy Spirit and take on the world.
The Spirit God gave you doesn’t make you timid. Timidity—fear, hesitation, weakness—doesn’t come from the Holy Spirit. When you feel timid, you’re not operating in the Spirit’s power. You’re relying on your own limited resources instead of the unlimited resources inside you.
God’s Spirit gives you three specific qualities: power to confront fierce enemies and overcome obstacles; love—not human, limited love but supernatural love that can battle hate and extend to the unlovable; and self-discipline to resist temptation and make right choices even when it’s hard.
This isn’t potential you need to develop or strength you need to build up—it’s already inside you. You just need to access it. Like Popeye’s spinach, the Holy Spirit is ready to be “popped open” whenever you need Him.
When you’re facing something that makes you feel timid, weak, or overwhelmed, stop and remember what’s inside you. You have the Holy Spirit. That means you have access to divine power, supernatural love, and spiritual self-discipline. Don’t whine about how you’ll ever get through this—pop open your can of Holy Spirit and take it on.
Identify which of the three you need most right now. Facing a fierce enemy or obstacle? You need power. Dealing with hateful people or battling bitterness in your own heart? You need supernatural love. Struggling with temptation or lack of discipline? You need self-discipline. The Spirit provides all three—ask Him specifically for what you need.
Stop trying to handle things in your own strength. When you’re timid, it’s because you’re looking at your own inadequacy instead of the Holy Spirit’s adequacy inside you. Shift your focus from what you can’t do to what the Spirit can do through you.
Remember this isn’t about becoming stronger—it’s about accessing the strength already in you. You don’t need to work yourself up into courage. You need to tap into the power source that’s already been given to you. The Holy Spirit inside you is strong, loving, and self-controlled. Let Him work through you.
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit. Thank You that the Spirit You gave me doesn’t make me timid but gives me power, love, and self-discipline. I confess that I often forget what’s inside me. I whine, complain, and wonder how I’m ever going to get through what I’m facing.
But I have the Holy Spirit in me. I have access to divine power to confront fierce enemies. I have supernatural love to battle hate and extend to difficult people. I have spiritual self-discipline to resist temptation and make right choices.
Right now I need [name which you need most: power, love, or self-discipline]. I’m facing [name your specific situation], and in my own strength I feel timid and inadequate. But I’m not operating in my own strength—I have Your Spirit inside me.
Help me to pop open my can of Holy Spirit and take on what’s in front of me. Let Your power work through me. Let Your love flow through me. Let Your self-discipline guide me. I’m strong because You’re in me. I’m filled with love because You’re in me. I’m able to live a disciplined life because You’re in me.
I won’t forget what’s inside me anymore. I’ll access Your power instead of relying on my weakness. Thank You for equipping me with everything I need through Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
