“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
What causes fear and worry in our lives? What causes weakness and unsteadiness? Being alone.
The feeling of loneliness—that it’s just us versus the world—causes all our fears and worries. We know we can’t do it alone. We know we are helpless when we see the forces rise up against us.
So what can take away our loneliness that causes our fear and worry? Relationship.
Knowing that someone is there for us, watching our backs, picking us up when we stumble, fighting off the attackers, protecting us from harm.
God promises to be there with us. We don’t have to be dismayed unless we refuse His companionship. He’s right there reaching out His hand. Take it and fear no more.
This verse addresses the root cause of our fear and worry: the feeling of being alone. When we face overwhelming circumstances, our first instinct is often to assess whether we can handle it on our own. And when we realize we can’t—that the forces rising up against us are too strong, that we’re helpless—that’s when fear and dismay set in.
God’s response is not to minimize the threat or tell us we’re stronger than we think. Instead, He addresses the real problem—our aloneness. “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”
Notice the four promises God makes: “I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” These aren’t vague encouragements. They’re specific commitments:
I will strengthen you — God gives you strength you don’t naturally have.
I will help you — God actively assists you in what you’re facing.
I will uphold you — God holds you up when you’re about to fall.
With my righteous right hand — God uses His powerful, righteous hand to do all this for you.
The imagery of God’s “righteous right hand” is significant. In ancient times, the right hand was the hand of power and action. God is saying, “I’m using my full strength on your behalf.”
What takes away the loneliness that causes our fear and worry? Relationship. Knowing that someone is there for us, watching our backs, picking us up when we stumble, fighting off the attackers, protecting us from harm. God promises to be that Someone.
Recognize when fear and dismay are really symptoms of feeling alone. When you’re overwhelmed, ask yourself: “Am I afraid because I think I have to handle this by myself?” Most of our anxiety comes from forgetting we’re not alone in the fight.
Take God’s hand that He’s reaching out to you. He’s not far away watching from a distance—He’s right there extending His hand. This isn’t passive comfort; it’s active partnership. When you pray, picture yourself actually taking the hand God is offering you.
Let God strengthen you instead of trying to manufacture your own strength. Stop telling yourself, “I just need to be stronger, to try harder, to pull myself together.” You can’t strengthen yourself for battles that are bigger than you. Accept the strength God offers.
Let God help you instead of insisting on doing everything yourself. Pride makes us think we should be able to handle life alone. Faith says, “I need help, and God promises to help me.” Don’t refuse the help He’s offering.
Let God uphold you when you’re about to fall. You will stumble. You will feel like you can’t keep going. In those moments, God’s righteous right hand catches you and holds you up. Trust that He won’t let you fall completely.
Remember that God is watching your back, fighting off attackers, and protecting you from harm. You have Someone with you who is stronger than anything you face. This relationship—this companionship—is what removes the loneliness that causes fear.
Lord, I confess that so much of my fear comes from feeling alone. When I look at what I’m facing, I know I can’t do it by myself. I feel helpless when I see the forces rising up against me, and that loneliness causes all my worry and dismay.
Thank You for Your promise: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” Thank You that I don’t have to be alone in this fight.
I receive Your four promises today:
You will strengthen me—give me strength I don’t naturally have for what I’m facing.
You will help me—actively assist me in this battle I can’t win alone.
You will uphold me—hold me up when I’m about to fall, when I can’t keep going on my own.
You will do all this with Your righteous right hand—using Your full power on my behalf.
I see You reaching out Your hand to me right now. I take it. I accept Your companionship. I refuse to walk through this alone when You’ve promised to be with me.
Thank You for watching my back, for picking me up when I stumble, for fighting off the attackers, for protecting me from harm. Thank You that someone is there for me—not just anyone, but You, my God.
Because You are with me, I will not fear. Because You are my God, I will not be dismayed. I’m holding Your hand, and I fear no more. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
