“The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.” (NKJV)
God is not distant. He’s not unreachable. He’s not too busy with more important things to pay attention to you.
God is near to all who call upon Him.
When you pray, you’re not shouting into the void hoping someone might hear. You’re talking to Someone who is already close, Someone who is already listening, Someone who is already paying attention to you.
All you have to do is call. That’s it. Not perform perfectly. Not clean yourself up first. Not figure out the right words. Just call.
And God is near.
This verse comes from Psalm 145, one of David’s psalms of praise. David is declaring the character and faithfulness of God, and this particular truth is one of the most comforting in all of Scripture: The LORD is near to all who call upon Him.
Notice the word “all.” This isn’t reserved for spiritual giants, mature believers, or people who have their lives together. It’s for all who call upon Him. That includes you, right where you are, exactly as you are.
The requirement is simple: call upon Him. Not pray eloquently. Not perform ritually. Not earn the right to His attention. Just call. Cry out. Speak. Even if it’s just “Help”—that’s enough.
But there’s an important qualifier: “to all who call upon Him in truth.” What does “in truth” mean? It means sincerity, genuineness, honesty. It means you’re really calling to God, not just going through religious motions. It means you actually want Him, not just what He can give you.
God is near to those who genuinely seek Him. He’s close to those who really want a relationship with Him, not just a transaction. He’s present with those who come to Him honestly, even if their honesty includes doubt, anger, or confusion.
The promise is that God is “near.” Not that He will eventually show up. Not that He might come if you’re worthy. He is near—present tense, right now. When you call to Him, you’re not summoning Him from a distance. You’re acknowledging Someone who is already close.
This changes everything about prayer. You’re not trying to get God’s attention—you already have it. You’re not trying to reach Someone far away—He’s already near. You’re simply opening yourself to the presence of Someone who is already with you.
Stop thinking you have to clean yourself up before calling on God. You don’t have to fix your life, get your act together, or become more spiritual before you pray. God is near to all who call upon Him—which means He’s near to messy people, struggling people, doubting people, sinful people. Call to Him right where you are.
Just call. Don’t overthink prayer. Don’t worry about having the right words or saying things correctly. God doesn’t need eloquence—He needs honesty. Even if all you can manage is “God, help me,” that’s calling upon Him in truth. And He is near.
Come to God with sincerity, not performance. Calling upon God “in truth” means being real with Him. Tell Him what you’re actually feeling, not what you think you should be feeling. Tell Him what you actually need, not what sounds spiritual. God wants your genuine heart, not your religious performance.
Remember that God is already near when you pray. You’re not trying to get His attention—you already have it. You’re not trying to reach Him—He’s already close. When you pray, you’re acknowledging the presence of Someone who has been near all along. This should give you confidence to approach Him freely.
Call on God throughout the day. If God is near to all who call upon Him, then you can call upon Him anytime, anywhere, about anything. You don’t have to wait for a designated prayer time or a quiet moment alone. In the middle of your stress, in the middle of your workday, in the middle of your struggle—just call. He’s near.
Expect nearness, not just answers. The promise isn’t that God will give you everything you ask for—it’s that He will be near when you call. Sometimes the nearness of God is the answer. Sometimes His presence is what you needed more than the solution you were asking for. Don’t miss the nearness while you’re waiting for the answer.
Heavenly Father, thank You that You are near to all who call upon You. Thank You that I don’t have to shout across a great distance hoping You might hear me. You’re already close. You’re already listening. You’re already paying attention to me.
I confess that I often don’t believe this. I pray like You’re far away. I hesitate to call to You because I don’t feel worthy of Your attention. I hold back because I think You’re too busy with more important things. But You promise that You’re near to all who call upon You—and that includes me.
Help me stop thinking I have to clean myself up before coming to You. Help me call to You right where I am, exactly as I am, messy and struggling and imperfect. You’re near to all who call upon You, which means You’re near to people like me.
I want to call upon You in truth. Not with religious performance, not with words I think I should say, but with genuine sincerity and honesty. I want to tell You what I’m actually feeling, not what I think I should be feeling. I want to bring You my real needs, not what sounds spiritual.
Here’s what I’m really feeling right now: [Tell God honestly what’s on your heart.] Here’s what I really need: [Tell God your actual needs.] I’m calling to You in truth, with my genuine heart, and I trust that You are near.
Thank You that when I pray, I’m not trying to get Your attention—I already have it. I’m not trying to reach You from a distance—You’re already close. I’m simply opening myself to the presence of Someone who has been near all along.
Help me call on You throughout my day. Not just in designated prayer times, but in the middle of everything—in my stress, in my work, in my struggles. Remind me that I can call to You anytime, anywhere, about anything, and You are near.
I choose to expect Your nearness. Not just answers to my prayers, but Your actual presence. Sometimes Your nearness is the answer. Sometimes Your presence is what I need more than the solution I’m asking for. Don’t let me miss Your nearness while I’m waiting for other things.
You are near to all who call upon You. I’m calling upon You right now. Thank You for being close. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
