Overcoming with Him-Transformed Through Trials 1

"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you."

John 14:26

The Holy Spirit, Your Advocate

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

The word for Advocate in the Greek is parakletos. The word has a number of translations. It can mean a person who comes to your assistance in a time of need. A person who pleads your case for you, like in court. Or simply a guide. When we see someone in court with their lawyer, the lawyer leans over at times to the client, suggesting, encouraging, and warning. That’s what the Holy Spirit does. He’s our Public Defender.

What This Teaches Us

This verse reveals that during hard times, the Holy Spirit is teaching you and reminding you. He’s teaching you how to love God more and showing you biblical truths. He’s reminding you that God loves you and Jesus died for you. All you have to do is listen, agree, and obey. You’re not alone during your struggle. Your Advocate is right by your side.

The Holy Spirit isn’t distant or passive. He’s actively working in your life like a lawyer who leans in during a difficult trial. He suggests the right path forward. He encourages you when you’re discouraged. He warns you when you’re about to make a wrong turn. He teaches you truth when confusion tries to overwhelm you.

This Advocate was sent by the Father in Jesus’ name. That means He represents Jesus to you and speaks with Jesus’ authority. When the Holy Spirit teaches you, it’s Jesus teaching you. When He reminds you of God’s love, it’s God Himself speaking to your heart. You have direct access to divine wisdom and encouragement through the Holy Spirit living within you.

How to Apply This in Daily Life

When you’re going through hard times, remember you have an Advocate whispering guidance in your ear. Pause and listen for the Holy Spirit’s voice. He might be teaching you something new about God’s character, reminding you of a biblical truth you’ve forgotten, or warning you away from a destructive path.

Practice listening, agreeing, and obeying. The Holy Spirit can’t help you if you ignore His counsel. When you sense Him teaching you how to love God more, listen. When He reminds you of God’s love, agree with that truth. When He warns you or guides you, obey.

Don’t try to navigate your struggles alone. You have a divine Public Defender right by your side throughout every trial. Talk to Him. Ask Him to teach you, remind you, and guide you. He was sent for this exact purpose—to be your Advocate in times of need.

Trust that the Holy Spirit knows exactly what you need in each moment. He knows which biblical truth to bring to your mind. He knows when you need encouragement versus when you need correction. He’s not just knowledgeable—He’s personally invested in your growth and wellbeing.

Reflection Questions

  • Are you actively listening for the Holy Spirit’s guidance during your current struggles, or are you trying to figure everything out on your own?
  • When the Holy Spirit teaches you or reminds you of biblical truth, do you listen, agree, and obey, or do you ignore His counsel?
  • In what specific areas of your life do you need the Holy Spirit to act as your Advocate right now—teaching, reminding, or warning?
  • Do you truly believe you’re not alone in your struggle, that the Holy Spirit is right by your side like a lawyer whispering counsel during a trial?

Prayer For Guidance and Strength

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to be my Advocate. Thank You that I don’t have to face hard times alone—I have a divine Public Defender right by my side, teaching, reminding, encouraging, and warning me. Lord, I confess that I often try to navigate struggles on my own instead of listening for the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Holy Spirit, teach me during these hard times. Teach me how to love God more. Show me biblical truths I need to understand. Remind me that God loves me and Jesus died for me. When confusion tries to overwhelm me, bring clarity. When I’m discouraged, encourage me. When I’m about to make a wrong turn, warn me.

Help me to listen to Your voice, agree with Your truth, and obey Your guidance. I don’t want to ignore Your counsel. You were sent for this exact purpose—to be my Advocate in times of need. Lean in close and whisper what I need to hear. Give me ears to hear and a heart willing to respond.

Thank You that I’m not alone during my struggle. Thank You that my Advocate is right by my side, speaking with Jesus’ authority and representing Him to me. I trust You to guide me through this trial. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
