Romans 8:38-39
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Nothing can separate you from the love of God. Is that true? Everything described in this verse is from the outside, trying to convince you on the inside that God doesn’t love you. Death says God is powerless. Life is hard so God must be punishing you. Demons whisper lies. The future may look bleak so apparently God has given up on you. And on and on… Those suggestions can do you no harm unless you accept them.
This verse reveals the most secure promise in all of Scripture: absolutely nothing can separate you from God’s love in Christ Jesus. The only place to look to find confirmation of God’s love for you is Christ Jesus. He showed God’s love, spoke about it, and sacrificed to prove it. Sometimes these outside forces reveal God’s love to you, but they can be inconsistent. Jesus’ love never wavers. There’s no doubt about it.
Paul lists everything imaginable that might make us question God’s love: death, life, angels, demons, the present, the future, powers, height, depth, and anything else in all creation. He’s saying, “I’ve thought of everything—there’s literally nothing that can separate you from God’s love.” Not your circumstances, not spiritual forces, not time itself, not your location, not anything.
These external things try to convince you internally that God doesn’t love you. But they’re lying. Death whispers that God is powerless to save you. Hard circumstances suggest God is punishing you. Demons plant doubts. Bleak futures make it seem like God has abandoned you. But none of these things change the reality of God’s love—they can only change whether you believe it.
So no matter what life throws at you, don’t look anywhere else to find the proof of God’s love except in Jesus Christ. His life, death, and resurrection are the unchanging evidence that God loves you completely and eternally.
When circumstances make you question God’s love, immediately return to the cross. Jesus is the unchanging proof of God’s love for you. Don’t let external situations convince you internally that God doesn’t love you. The lie can only work if you accept it.
Recognize the voices that try to separate you from God’s love. When death threatens, when life gets hard, when the future looks bleak, when demons whisper lies—identify these as external attacks on the internal truth. They have no power unless you give them power by believing them.
Memorize this passage and declare it over your life when you’re under attack. When you feel separated from God, speak this truth aloud: “Nothing can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus—not death, not life, not anything in all creation.” Let God’s Word silence the lying voices.
Stop looking for proof of God’s love in your circumstances. Circumstances change, but Jesus doesn’t. Good times don’t prove God loves you more, and hard times don’t prove He loves you less. The cross is the constant, unchanging evidence of His love.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise that nothing can separate me from Your love in Christ Jesus. Thank You that this isn’t just wishful thinking but an absolute reality secured by Jesus’ death and resurrection. Lord, I confess that I sometimes let external circumstances convince me internally that You don’t love me.
When death threatens, I’m tempted to think You’re powerless. When life is hard, I wonder if You’re punishing me. When demons whisper lies, I start to believe them. When the future looks bleak, I fear You’ve given up on me. Forgive me for accepting these lies instead of standing firm on the truth of Your unchanging love.
Help me to look only to Jesus Christ for proof of Your love. He showed it, spoke it, and sacrificed to prove it. His love never wavers. There’s no doubt about it. When I’m under attack, remind me that these external forces have no power to change Your love—they can only change whether I believe it.
Let me live today in the security of knowing that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation can separate me from Your love. I am secure in Christ Jesus. In His powerful name, Amen.
