Heavenly Armor-Protectors on Call 2

Angels Watching Over You

“For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” (NKJV)

The term “guardian angel” never appears in the Bible, but at times we see glimpses of such things. Some people believe there are angels assigned directly to us, a thought planted in us by movies like It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s nice to think that, but nowhere in the Bible do we see that one angel is assigned to us for our entire life. However, we do see that God specifically commands angels to watch over us and protect us from slips, falls, and head-on collisions.

What This Teaches Us

This verse reveals something better than having one guardian angel: God commands multiple angels—a whole battalion—to watch over you. Would you rather have one angel keeping his eye on you or a whole battalion? This verse uses the plural to describe angels watching over us. The plural is much better.

God sends His angels to guard us, lift us up, push us out of the way, and help us up after falling. They are His angels, not ours, and He has a lot of them. These angels receive their orders directly from God to keep you in all your ways—not just in church or during your quiet time, but in every aspect of your life.

Angels protect you from dangers you never see. How many times have you almost tripped but caught yourself? How many near-miss accidents have you had? How many times has something bad almost happened but didn’t? It’s possible that angels were at work in those moments, bearing you up so you wouldn’t dash your foot against a stone.

How to Apply This in Daily Life

Live with confidence knowing that God has assigned angels to watch over you. This doesn’t mean you should be reckless or presume upon God’s protection, but it does mean you can walk through life without constant anxiety about every possible danger. God’s angels are on assignment to keep you safe.

Thank God for the protection you don’t see. Most of the time, you’re completely unaware of the angels’ work on your behalf. Develop a habit of thanking God for the accidents that didn’t happen, the falls you didn’t take, and the disasters you were spared from—many of which may have been prevented by angelic intervention.

Don’t try to test or manipulate this promise. When Satan tempted Jesus to throw Himself off the temple, quoting this very psalm, Jesus refused. God’s angels protect us in the course of following Him, not when we’re deliberately putting ourselves in danger to test God’s faithfulness.

Remember that these are God’s angels, not yours. They answer to Him and carry out His purposes. Trust that God knows when and how to deploy them for your protection. Your job isn’t to command angels but to trust the God who commands them on your behalf.

Reflection Questions

  • Does knowing that God commands multiple angels to watch over you change how you view your daily safety and protection?
  • Can you think of times when you narrowly avoided danger? Could angels have been protecting you without your awareness?
  • In what areas of your life have you been carrying excessive anxiety that you need to release, trusting in God’s angelic protection?
  • How does understanding that angels answer to God (not to you) help you trust His wisdom in how He protects you?

Prayer For Guidance and Strength

Heavenly Father, thank You for commanding Your angels to watch over me and keep me in all my ways. Thank You that You haven’t assigned just one angel but a whole battalion to guard me, lift me up, push me out of danger’s way, and help me up when I fall. This is better than I could have imagined or asked for.

Lord, I confess that I often worry about dangers and what might happen. Help me to live with confidence knowing that Your angels are on assignment to protect me. Thank You for the countless times they’ve kept me safe without my even knowing it—the trips I didn’t take, the accidents that didn’t happen, the disasters I was spared from.

Forgive me for the times I’ve been reckless or presumed upon Your protection. Help me to follow You faithfully, trusting that Your angels will protect me as I walk in Your ways, not when I’m testing You or deliberately putting myself in danger.

Thank You that these are Your angels, carrying out Your purposes for my life. I don’t need to understand how or when they work—I just need to trust You, the God who commands them. Give me peace today knowing that I’m surrounded by angelic protection. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
