“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?” (NASB)
So why are you afraid? God provides the light to see clearly where you are going and to scare away those enemies in the shadows who fear illumination. God gives life eternal, saving you from death, rescuing you from the grave. God is the ultimate stronghold, his power and strength revealed in His creation and His dominance over the devil and demons. Light. Life. Strength.
This verse reveals that God provides everything we need to live without fear. Who else can protect you? What else do you need? Where on earth can you possibly be defenseless? When are you going in fear? Start trusting God and using His resources to take away your fear. It’s all there for you and surrounding you.
God is your light—He shows you the way forward and exposes what’s hidden in darkness. You don’t have to stumble in confusion or be ambushed by unseen threats. God is your salvation—He has rescued you from eternal death and continues to save you daily from despair and destruction. God is your defense—He is the fortress that protects your life from every attack, physical and spiritual.
With God providing light, life, and strength, what legitimate reason remains for fear? The psalmist asks this rhetorically because the answer is clear: there is no reason. When the Creator of the universe is on your side, fighting for you and surrounding you with His protection, fear becomes illogical.
When fear rises in your heart, ask yourself the psalmist’s questions: “Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I dread?” Name your specific fears, then place them next to the truth that the Lord is your light, salvation, and defense. Let the magnitude of who God is dwarf your fears.
Use God’s resources that are already available to you. His Word is light that guides your path. His presence is the strength that fortifies you. His promises are the salvation that rescues you from despair. Don’t just acknowledge these resources—actively use them when fear threatens to overwhelm you.
Replace fearful thoughts with truth. When you’re afraid of the future, remember God is your light who illuminates the path ahead. When you fear death or loss, remember God is your salvation who has conquered the grave. When you feel vulnerable and exposed, remember God is your defense who surrounds you with protection.
Practice declaring this psalm aloud when fear attacks. Let your own voice remind your heart of what your mind knows to be true. Fear not. Trust Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my light, my salvation, and the defense of my life. You have given me everything I need to overcome fear, yet I still struggle with anxiety and dread. Forgive me for the times I’ve trusted in my own ability to protect myself instead of resting in Your power and presence.
Lord, I bring my specific fears before You right now. [Name your fears here.] Help me to see how small these fears are compared to Your greatness. You provide light to show me where I’m going. You give me eternal life and rescue me from death. You are my ultimate stronghold against every enemy, seen and unseen.
Teach me to use the resources You’ve already given me—Your Word, Your presence, Your promises—to fight fear. When I’m tempted to dread what might happen, remind me to ask, “Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I dread?” The answer is no one and nothing, because You are with me and for me.
Replace my fear with faith, my anxiety with assurance, my dread with devotion to You. Let me live today in the confidence that comes from knowing the Creator of the universe is my defender and protector. Fear not. I choose to trust You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
