“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” (NKJV)
You face opposition. You have enemies. You deal with people who want to see you fail. You encounter obstacles that seem impossible to overcome.
But here’s the question that changes everything: If God is for you, who can be against you?
Not “no one is against you”—clearly people and circumstances oppose you. The question is: does it matter? If the God of the universe is on your side, what difference does human opposition make?
God is for you. Not neutral. Not indifferent. Not distant. For you. On your side. In your corner. Fighting for your good.
And if that’s true, then no opposition—no matter how powerful—can ultimately prevail against you.
Paul wrote this near the end of Romans 8, one of the most powerful chapters in all of Scripture. He’s been explaining the incredible security believers have in Christ—no condemnation, the Spirit’s presence, God working all things for good, being conformed to Christ’s image.
And he pauses to ask: “What then shall we say to these things?” In light of everything God has done for us in Christ, what’s our response? What’s the logical conclusion?
His answer: “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Notice the “if”—but it’s not expressing doubt. It’s a conditional statement that’s absolutely true. Since God is for us (and He is), the question stands: who can effectively oppose us?
“God is for us” doesn’t mean God gives you everything you want or shields you from all difficulty. It means God is actively working for your ultimate good, your eternal benefit, your transformation into Christ’s likeness. He’s not against you—He’s for you.
The question “who can be against us?” isn’t saying no one opposes you. Paul himself faced tremendous opposition—persecution, imprisonment, beatings, shipwrecks. People were definitely against him.
The point is: their opposition doesn’t matter in the ultimate sense. They can oppose, but they can’t win. They can create difficulty, but they can’t defeat God’s purposes for you. They can hurt you temporarily, but they can’t separate you from God’s love or derail His plans.
This is about perspective. When you’re facing opposition, you can focus on who’s against you—and be overwhelmed. Or you can focus on who’s for you—and be confident. If God is in your corner, what does it matter who’s in the other corner?
The rest of Romans 8 goes on to ask more rhetorical questions: Who can bring charges against God’s elect? Who can condemn? Who can separate us from God’s love? And the answer to all of them is: no one. Nothing. Because God is for us.
Stop focusing on who’s against you and start focusing on who’s for you. When you face opposition—from people, from circumstances, from spiritual forces—it’s easy to fixate on the threat. But Paul redirects your focus: look at who’s in your corner. God is for you. That changes everything.
Remember that God being “for you” doesn’t mean avoiding all difficulty. God’s being for you doesn’t guarantee comfort or ease. It guarantees that He’s working everything—including opposition and hardship—for your ultimate good. His being for you means He’ll bring you through, not necessarily around.
Let this truth give you confidence in facing obstacles. When you face something that seems impossible, remember: God is for you. If He’s on your side, the obstacle isn’t as insurmountable as it appears. You’re not facing it alone. You’re not relying on your own strength. The God who is for you is also fighting for you.
Stop being intimidated by human opposition. People might oppose you. They might work against you. They might want to see you fail. But if God is for you, their opposition can’t ultimately prevail. Don’t give human enemies more power than they have. They can create temporary difficulty but can’t defeat God’s purposes.
Take comfort in this when you feel attacked. When you’re under spiritual attack, when lies are swirling in your mind, when you feel condemned or accused—remember that God is for you. The accuser’s voice doesn’t matter when God is on your side. The condemnation isn’t valid when God has declared you righteous.
Live with the boldness that comes from God being for you. You don’t have to live defensively, constantly worried about opposition. You can live with confidence, taking risks for God’s kingdom, stepping out in faith, because you know God is for you. His being for you frees you to live courageously.
Heavenly Father, thank You for this powerful truth: You are for me. Not neutral. Not indifferent. Not distant. You’re on my side. In my corner. Fighting for my good.
I face opposition right now. [Name specific people, circumstances, or spiritual forces opposing you.] Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by who and what is against me. I focus on the threats, the obstacles, the enemies, and I lose sight of the most important fact: You are for me.
Help me stop focusing on who’s against me and start focusing on who’s for me. If You—the God of the universe—are on my side, what does human opposition really matter? They can oppose, but they can’t win. They can create difficulty, but they can’t defeat Your purposes for me. They can hurt me temporarily, but they can’t separate me from Your love or derail Your plans.
Thank You that Your being for me doesn’t just mean You like me—it means You’re actively working for my ultimate good, my eternal benefit, my transformation into Christ’s likeness. You’re not just cheering from the sidelines. You’re involved, engaged, fighting for me.
Help me remember that Your being for me doesn’t mean avoiding all difficulty. You don’t shield me from every problem. But You promise to work everything—including opposition and hardship—for my good. Your being for me means You’ll bring me through, even when You don’t take me around.
Give me confidence in facing obstacles. When I face something that seems impossible, remind me: You are for me. If You’re on my side, the obstacle isn’t as insurmountable as it appears. I’m not facing it alone. I’m not relying on my own strength. You’re fighting for me.
Help me stop being intimidated by human opposition. People might oppose me, work against me, want to see me fail. But their opposition can’t ultimately prevail because You’re for me. Don’t let me give human enemies more power than they have. They can create temporary difficulty but can’t defeat Your purposes.
When I feel attacked spiritually, when lies swirl in my mind, when I feel condemned or accused—remind me: You are for me. The accuser’s voice doesn’t matter when You’re on my side. The condemnation isn’t valid when You’ve declared me righteous.
Let this truth free me to live boldly. I don’t have to live defensively, constantly worried about opposition. I can live with confidence, take risks for Your kingdom, step out in faith, because You are for me. Let Your being for me free me to live courageously.
If You are for me, who can be against me? The answer is: it doesn’t matter who’s against me, because You’re more powerful than any opposition I’ll ever face. Thank You for being on my side. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
